Preparation For Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants are a popular treatment option for replacing your missing teeth. While the implant procedure is considered very safe and well-tolerated by most people, oral surgery is needed so that the rods can be effectively implanted into the jaw. Because you will be having surgery, you will need to prepare. Here are some preparation tips to follow to help ensure that your implant procedure and recovery period goes well.

Medications And Dietary Supplements

Before you get your dental implants, talk to both your primary care physician and your dentist about the medications and dietary supplements that you are taking. Certain medications and supplements can decrease platelet aggregation which could raise your risk for bleeding during and after your implant surgery. For example, if you take daily aspirin, prescription anticoagulants, or fish oil supplements, your physician and dentist may recommend stopping them for a week or so prior to your implant surgery. If these medications are still in your system when the metal rods are surgically implanted into your jawbone, you may be at risk for excessive bleeding.

Day Of Implant Surgery

On the day of your dental implant surgery, your dentist may recommend eating a healthy light meal prior to your procedure. Eating a healthy meal before your surgery is especially important if you are a diabetic. Stable blood sugar levels are important so that optimal healing can begin immediately following the implantation of the titanium rods. Also, before you have your surgery, you will be asked to swish your mouth out with special antimicrobial mouthwash to help decrease oral bacteria.

Prior to your dental implant surgery, you will also be given antibiotics to help prevent postoperative infection. Steroid medications will also be administered to help reduce postoperative discomfort and swelling. In addition, if you have chosen to have sedation anesthesia instead of a simple local anesthetic, then you will need to have someone pick you up from your dentist's office. You will not be able to drive because of the lingering effects of the sedation medication, however, your dentist may clear you to drive after a day or so.

If you are getting dental implants, consider the above preparation tips. Dental implants not only enhance your overall appearance, but they may also help promote better chewing, reduce tooth grinding, and promote jawbone health. With proper care and regular dental visits, you will be able to enjoy your dental implants for decades to come.
